FAQ

What’s with the colours?

We set out to encourage discovery and exploration of a dynamic spectrum of taste experiences. Flavour is a journey, and it is our privilege to help shine some light on the world of possibilities that coffee presents by curating our roasts into coloured collections (Blue, Yellow and Red) defined by their taste profiles.

Blue - Cozy & Familiar

Yellow - Vibrant & Dynamic

Red - Exotic & Unique

Is your coffee fair trade and/or organic?

Sometimes. But we do not seek out these certifications because they do not always guarantee superior and fair cultivation practices to the level that we require. We place emphasis primarily on quality and taste of the coffees we buy, and we do so while promoting transparency and sustainability in the supply chain. We aim to develop strong and equitable relationships with coffee producers and highly specialized coffee importers in order to build awareness and communities while bettering the practices and product of the coffee industry.

How fresh is my coffee when I receive it?

We roast our coffee fresh every week and work with our partners to ensure our coffee is always served and sold at peak freshness. Best enjoyed between 5 days and 3 weeks off roast, we display the roast date on each bag of Kaito coffee so you can rest assured of its quality and freshness.

How long will my coffee stay fresh?

We generally recommend that our coffee be enjoyed between 5 days and 3 weeks off roast (roast date is indicated on each bag); this is where your coffee is at peak freshness. Beyond 3 weeks, your coffee will gradually begin to lose its aromatics, and so we encourage you to only purchase as much coffee as you may need during its peak freshness period. We also recommend grinding on demand and storing coffee beans in a sealed container in a cool dry place.

Can you pre-grind my coffee?

Yes. If you do not have a grinder, you may simply indicate in the notes section of your order that you would like your coffee pre-ground and which type of coffee brewer you are using so we may determine the appropriate grind size.

While we make this service available, we caution that pre-grinding your coffee will result in significantly faster loss of aroma and flavour than in its whole bean format. Coffee is always best served when ground immediately prior to brewing, and we highly encourage you to purchase a good quality grinder to optimize your coffee experience at home.

How should I prepare my coffee for best results?

Coffee can be brewed in a number of different ways with varying characteristics depending on the technique, equipment and recipe used. What is most important is your enjoyment of the resulting cup of coffee, and so we highly encourage the exploration of various styles of coffee in order to determine your preference. For more detailed information on coffee preparation, please see our brewing guides.

Why don’t you offer larger size bags?

Freshness is a key component of our quality promise, and we want to ensure you are always drinking our coffee at its absolute best. As such, we retail exclusively in 12oz bags in order to encourage you to purchase only as much coffee as you may need while it remains at peak freshness (between 5 days and 3 weeks off roast).
